Accommodation

Gisenyi

is situated on the banks of picturesque Lake Kivu in western Rwanda, a 3-hour road journey from Kigali. It is an attractive, though somewhat faded, lakeside resort, which is also a border crossing point into the Congo.

Lodging:

Serena Hotel Lake Kivu:
Expensive. The brand-new, 4-star Kivu Sun is the best hotel in Gisenyi, on the shores of Lake Kivu in western Rwanda. The hotel is right on the lake and offers views across the water to the Virungas volcanoes.

The hotel provides accommodation in 66 rooms, including 6 suites, 23 family rooms and a room for people with disabilities. All rooms are climate controlled, with satellite TV.

The hotel has two restaurants, The Kivu Sands and the Lake View Bar and Terrace. The former is a fine dining experience serving buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with the choice of an a la carte option for lunch and dinner; the Bar and Terrace has live music at weekends and is the place to meet after dark.

Facilities include a fully equipped gym, an indoor swimming pool and two tennis courts. Room service is available. The hotel offers activities including boat trips and water sports on the lake.

Great location, food is good (they have the most amazing breakfast spread I have ever seen, and the weekend dinner buffets are excellent). Historic headquarters for genocidaires during the 1994 war. Friendly staff, most beautiful pool in Rwanda, private beach, mosquito screens, gym, tennis courts. Mostly owned by the government . If you stay here, please do me a favor and dont be one of those ignorant muzungus who doesnt see anything of the real Gisenyi. Get out and explore.

Paradis Malahide:
An ideal climate, the perfect amount of sunshine, a relaxing lake and rolling green hills…
PARADIS GISENYI MALAHIDE is ideally situated in an area of unparalleled natural splendor.
The Hotel is located just seven kilometers from downtown Gisenyi, this beautiful space provides the perfect escape.
Bungalows:
Each comfortable bungalow was built using local wood and volcanic rock, to blend seamlessly into the natural beauty of the area.
A perfect night’s sleep awaits you as you fall asleep to the sounds of Lake Kivu floating into the shore. In the morning, you will be enchanted by the songs of the fishermen and birds.
Rooms Available:
10 (six bungalows and four apartments in larger two story bungalows).
Restaurant:
Each dish in our restaurant is inspired by local ingredients and flavors. You will be delighted by our varied menu; each item is both unique and memorable.
The classic flavors of grilled tilapia and isambaza (small fried fish) are two of our most requested specialties.
Enjoy your meal as you sit beside Lake Kivu surrounded by fragrant flowers of every color. You may also choose to dine inside your bungalow, in a boat on Lake Kivu or on the nearby private island.

Palm Beach Hotel:
Moderate. Great location, next to Kivu Sun. Only the suite has a beach view. Lively at night. No mosquito screens on the windows, but there are mosquito nets. Food is okay, its advised not to eat the salads since theyre not uber-hygenically washed the way produce is at Kivu Sun. Canadian-owned. Also, be sure to check your bill, because this place has a reputation for overcharging stupid muzungus.

Stipp Hotel:
Moderate-Expensive. Beautiful hotel with a great pool and pool bar. Former office of UNHCR, right after the war. Favorite hangout for wealthier locals, particularly during soccer matches. Rooms are very comfortable with nice bathrooms. Breakfast is included, and its good. The courtyard is beautiful, and the view of the lake is even nicer. Not far from the beach. They are building an addition which will include a gym. Food is good, but a bit expensive. Their African tea is some of the best in town. Only place in Gisenyi with a steam, sauna, and massage. Massages are about $13 for an hour.

Hotel Ubumwe:
Cheap-Moderate. Lake view but is set back from the beach. A favorite for those who want to save money. Food is pretty good. Nice courtyard. Far away from the action, so if you want a quiet place, this is a good choice.

La Bella:
Cheap. European-style house, kind of look like it was uprooted from Switzerland and dropped here. Rooms are great, most have their own bathrooms. Very quiet. No screens on the windows, but there is a mosquito net. Beautiful view of the garden, and you can see the lake through the trees. Breakfast included. The food here is less than spectacular, and I asked myself if anyone actually worked at the restaurant because the service was so poor.

La Corniche:
Cheap. No view, far away from the action. Rwandan-owned. Rooms and bathrooms are a bit tired. Food is uniquely Rwandan, is good. Undergoing renovations right now, so maybe the rooms will be better. Owner speaks English and French.

Auberge de Gisenyi:
Cheap. I havent been here, but Ive come across a lot of backpackers who have said this place is pretty good. Its in the middle of town, very noisy. I dont particularly like the quarter where its located (its next to the bus station), but if you dont mind being bothered, it seems like a good (and cheap) choice.

Presbyterian Guest House:
Cheap. In Gisenyi town, not near the beach. A good value if youre looking for the cheapest possible option.

Cyangugu

Hotel des Chutes

Hotel du Lac Kivu
At the southern end of the lake, Cyangugu (pronounced Shangugu) is an old border town whose fading façades tell of its past as a  vital trading gateway. Here the Hotel du Lac is a delightfully old, reliable-but-slightly-shady institution, with a bar/restaurant where youre guaranteed to find some offbeat characters.
