ORTPN LAUNCHES

On Friday 27^th April 2007, the Rwanda Office of Tourism and National Parks (ORTPN) unveiled “Kwita Izina “as the new brand name for the Gorilla naming Event.

One of the most celebrated traditions of Banyarwanda people is the naming ceremony known as “Kwita Izina” which means ‘to give a name’. In a conscious effort to raise the profile of the gorilla naming ceremony and propel it into one of the world’s tourist premier events, ORTPN has adapted this name to celebrate the births of Gorillas in their natural habitat. Every birth is a confirmation of a successful conservation and protection program that will one day achieve its principle objective of removing the mountain gorilla off the endangered species list.

Unveiling the new name, The Director General ORTPN Rosette Chantal Rugamba said, “The new event brand Identity has been developed to incorporate the evolution of the Gorilla naming event from a local event into an event of international stature while keeping a national identity that is distinctively Rwandese.”

The need to evolve the identity was in line with the broader vision of this event. Rwanda was the first country to have a public Gorilla naming ceremony and intends to use this high profile event, firstly as a platform to create awareness at both national and International level and keep the momentum and enthusiasm by everybody to protect the few remaining Mountain Gorilla’s in the world. Secondly, to advise on the success of Rwanda’s conservation of the Mountain Gorillas and it’s Habitat and thirdly to attract tourists to come and visit Rwanda during the Kwita Izina ceremonies. 

Very soon we shall have a number of Kwita Izina merchandise like Caps, T-shirts, Pens and bags on sale at our newly refurbished reception.

This year the Kwita Izina event that will be held in Musanze district in Kinigi on the 30^th June 2007 will see 23 gorillas being given names and will start at 10am. The theme this year is “Caring for Wildlife concerns us all”. Under this theme, we shall celebrate the efforts of all those that have contributed to the wildlife welfare and its conservation. We are expecting over 100 key personalities in wild life conservation and business to attend the event.

We invite everyone to come and be part of this event which will help ensure the survival of the few remaining Mountain Gorillas

Notes to Editors:

• The first public Gorilla naming ceremony was launched on June 25^th 2005. The guest of Honour who was his Excellency President Kagame and Madame Jeanette Kagame named the first ever surviving twins in the world. The event was followed by a fundraising gala that realized over USD 2 million towards community projects.
• The projects that were realized from funds raised at the first gorilla Naming in 2005 include Construction of US$ 1Million Sabyinyo Community Lodge (SACOLA), Construction of Primary schools in Mugarama and Nyagwe in Burera, the development of a Buffer Zone in Burera, 10 water collection tanks and construction of a  74km Bufallo wall to hold wildlife inside the park limits. 
• Facts on the mountain gorillas:
• Humans and gorillas share 97% of their genetic material.
• The population of mountain gorilla that is harbored in the Volcano National Park, Rwanda is estimated to have over 80% of the entire population in the Virunga Massif (which is estimated to be 380 individuals, according to the last mountain gorilla census in 2003 while the gorilla population in Bwindi forest in Uganda is estimated to be above 300 individuals.
• An adult silverback eats up to 30kg everyday and is known to live up to 45years
• Ever since the first public gorilla naming in 2005, 42 gorillas have been given names.
• The names play a great part in the program of daily monitoring of each individual and gorilla families in their habitat. The names chosen are based on circumstances surrounding the baby’s birth or particular traits.

Vendredi le 27 avril 2007, l’Office Rwandais du Tourisme et des Parcs Nationaux (ORTPN) va introduire Kwita Izina le nouveau concept relatif à la Cérémonie d’Attribution des Noms aux Gorilles, cérémonie qui est célébrée chaque année à Kinigi, près du Parc National des Volcans.

L’une des traditions les plus célébrées des Banyarwanda est la cérémonie d’attribution de noms aux nouveaux nés  connue sous le nom de "Kwita Izina" qui signifie ` donner un nom '. Dans le but délibéré de relever le profil de la cérémonie d’attribution de noms aux gorille pour en faire un événement touristique d’envergure mondiale, l’ ORTPN a envisage d’adapter ce concept pour célébrer les naissances des gorilles dans leur habitat naturel. Chaque naissance de gorille est témoignage du  succès confirmé dans la protection et la conservation du gorille de montagne et qui – croyons-le verra le gorille de montagne enlevé de la liste des espèces menacées du monde.

En  introduisant le nouveau concept, Mme Rosette Chantal Rugamba , Directrice Générale de l’ORTPN dit, "le nouveau concept « Kwita Izina » qui donne une identité spécifique à l’événement, a été pensé pour inclure l’évolution de l’événement d’attribution de noms aux gorilles de montagne, doit être perçu  non pas comme un cérémonie locale mais plutôt comme événement d’envergure internationale tout en gardant une identité nationale qui est distinctivement rwandaise.

La nécessité d'évoluer l'identité de cet événement était en conformité avec la vision plus large de cet événement. Le Rwanda a été premier pour célébrer publiquement l’attribution de noms aux gorilles et voudrait alors utiliser cet événement de haut profile pour d’abord comme une plateforme pour sensibiliser au niveau national et international et pour imprimer l'élan et l'enthousiasme par tout le monde pour la protection des quelques gorilles de montagne qui restent encore de montagne dans le monde. En deuxième lieu, pour informer sur le succès de la conservation des gorilles de montagne du Rwanda et leur habitat et enfin, attirer des touristes à venir visiter le Rwanda pendant les cérémonies de Kwita Izina.

Très bientôt nous aurons un certain nombre de marchandises portant ce concept de Kwita Izina comme les chapeaux, le T-shirt, les stylos et les sacs en vente à notre réception récemment reformée.

Cette année l'événement de Kwita Izina qui sera tenu à Kinigi, district de Musanze e date du 30 juin 2007 verra 23 gorilles de montagne qui seront donnés les noms et commencera à partir de 10heures du matin. Le thème de cette année "la protection de la flore et la faune nous  concerne tous". Sous ce thème, nous célébrerons les efforts du tous ceux qui ont contribué au bien-être de faune et flore et à sa conservation. Nous attendons plus d’une centaine de personnalités et figures importantes et mondialement connues pour leurs efforts dans la conservation et ainsi que les hommes d’affaire qui participeront à cet événement ainsi que les hommes d’affaires. Nous lançons une invitation à chacun de venir et prendre part à cet événement qui contribuera à assurer la survie des gorilles de montagne

Notes aux rédacteurs :

• La première cérémonie publique d’attribution de noms aux gorilles de montagne été lancée le 25 juin 2005. L'invité d’ honneur qui était Son Excellence le Président Paul Kagame  et Son Epouse, Madame Jeanette Kagame ont donné le nom à un couple de jumeaux gorilles, les seuls premiers jumeaux qui ont pu survivre jusqu’alors dans le monde. Cet événement a été suivi d'une soirée de gala pendant laquelle une collecte de fonds équivalent à quelques 2 millions de Dollars a pu être réalisée en vue de soutenir des  projets communautaires.
• Les projets qui ont été réalisés des à partir des fonds collectés lors de la première cérémonie publique d’attribution de noms aux gorilles en 2005 consistent en la construction d’une loge communautaire du nom de SACOLA pour le montant de 1 Million de dollars, la construction d’écoles primaires à Mugarama et Nyagwe dans Burera, le développement d'une zone-tampon dans Burera, la construction de 10 réservoirs de collection de l'eau de pluie et la construction d'un mur de pierres contre les buffles long de 74km .
• Quelques données sur les gorilles de montagne:
• L’homme et le gorille ont en commun 97% de leur matériel génétique.
• on estime que le Parc National des Volcans au Rwanda abrite plus du tiers de la population de gorilles de tout le Massif des Virunga (380 gorilles dans le massif de Virunga selon le dernier recensement des gorilles effectué en 2003) tandis la Forêt de Bwindi (Uganda) abrite une population estimée à plus 300 individus de gorilles de montagne
• Un gorille adulte mâle appelé communément « dos argenté » (Silverback) mange jusqu'à 30kg de végétaux par jour et pourrait vivre jusqu’ 45 ans
• Jusqu’aujourd’hui, plus de 42 gorilles ont reçu le nom dans la cérémonie publique
• les noms jouent un grand rôle dans le programme de la surveillance quotidienne de chaque individu et des familles de gorille dans leur habitat. Les noms choisis sont basés sur des circonstances entourant la naissance ou les traits particuliers de l’individu qui reçoit le nom.
